New England Red Sox Wheelchair Softball Team takes second place at 7th Annual Major League Wheelchair Softball Tournament
|
|
Wheelchair softball is a challenging and exciting sport that first started in the Midwest. It first began with a few individuals who had the desire to play softball despite their disabilities. In 1998, a few members of New England decide to try the sport of softball on the parking lot of Mass Hospital School. Everyone was hooked on this new sport. In 1999, the Brockton VA Medical Center created the first wheelchair softball field in the New England area, sending the message that softball is here to stay. New England Red Sox is a member of the National Wheelchair Softball Association that serves as the governing body for wheelchair softball. Wheelchair softball is the same as slow pitch softball as approved by the Amateur Softball Association of America with some exceptions made for the wheelchair users. Two major exceptions are the field is an asphalt field such as a parking lot with baselines and bases painted on the blacktop and a 16-inch softball is used to allow players to catch the ball without using gloves. The NWSA hosts an annual tournament where teams from all over the nation come to compete. New England is excited about its new softball program that enables almost anyone to compete.
